Shortcuts won't work immediately after you've clicked anywhere outside of the room & storage area. Just click anywhere inside the room to make them work again.

Warning: Free-form drawings will be cleared by many actions (like turning the grid on or off, minimizing the window, etc.) You will also erase any part of a free-form drawing by dragging an item of furniture over it. So, it's best to think of these drawings as just temporary.
