Design-A-Room is an extremely useful tool for figuring out how to arrange your furniture! You can enter every room in your home and even move furniture from room to room using the 'Furniture Storage' area.
Design-A-Room was designed to be as easy to use as it is useful to use. You simply enter the name and dimensions of any room. Then create furniture either by clicking and dragging or by entering in the dimensions. You can choose from the 'Pre-Built' menu for some common sized furniture. But you can only expect accurate results, of course, if you pull out the tape measure and measure your furniture yourself! You can also create doors and windows from the 'Shape' dropdown in the Furniture section. You can rotate your furniture by choosing the direction and degrees in the bottom section. Choose 'Continuous' to start your furniture spinning, then click it to stop it where you like. If you want to save your room designs, you can register simply by entering a username and password above, then click the 'SAVE' button. You can also print and email your designs. I hope that Design-A-Room makes your life at least just a little bit easier. Enjoy Design-A-Room and please tell your friends about it! Right-click on an item of furniture and drag on any of the tabs to resize the item (or Left-click and press the 'ALT' key). You can also adjust the size and other settings for the item directly in the middle panel. You have three options for creating furniture. You can either type in the exact dimensions of the item in the middle panel and click 'Create Furniture', or you can click and drag your mouse in any free area in the room to the size of the desired item and it will be created automatically. The third option, pre-built furniture, is explained next. Choose any of the items in the 'Pre-Built Furniture' menu, and it will automatically appear in 'Furniture Storage'. You can then adjust the settings for the item in the middle panel, if necessary. Choose 'Wall' in the Pre-Built Furniture menu to create more walls if your room is not square. You can change the length with the middle panel, and the rotation with the rotation panel. Then drag the wall where you need it. You have two options for moving furniture. You can drag the item with your mouse, or you can click on the item and then use the arrow keys, while holding down the 'ALT' key, to move it North, East, South and West. You can draw free-form by dragging your mouse inside the room, while holding down the 'shift' key. The pen color will be the same as the color of the last piece of furniture touched (to clear your free-form drawings, see SHORTCUTS). Choose 'CREATE NEW' from the pull down menu at the top of the ROOM panel to create additional rooms. Then you can alternate between rooms by selecting them in the same pull down menu. Transfer furniture from one room to another by moving it into the 'Furniture Storage' area. To create a door, choose "Open Door" in the 'Furniture Shape' pull-down menu. When entering dimensions for a door, the width and length will always be set equal to the longer dimension you provide (use the width of the doorway.) After you've created a door, you can rotate it to open in the correct direction. To create a window, choose "Window" in the 'Furniture Shape' pull-down menu. When a window is created, one of either the length or width will always be set to 0.5 feet. You can choose "Feet," "Inches," or "Meters" as your unit of measurement for any dimension. Once an item of furniture is created you can see the measurement conversions by changing just the unit. Click on any piece of furniture to bring up the current settings for that item in the middle panel, where they can then be updated. There will also then be 2 other buttons you can use:
Click this button to leave update mode and clear the furniture settings fields. Click this button to rotate a selected piece of furniture. You can choose the direction of rotation - clockwise or counterclockwise. You can also choose how much to rotate. Choose '1 degree' for small adjustments. Choose 'Continuous' to start the piece of furniture rotating on its own. Click the button again to make it stop. Choose 'RESET' to return the furniture to its unrotated position. (Ovals, Doors, and Windows can only be rotated 90 degrees.) Click this button to move all the furniture into the 'Furniture Storage' area. Click this button to delete all the furniture currently in the 'Furniture Storage' area. A quick way to get rid of all the furniture is to first click the 'Store Everything' button, then click the 'Clear Storage' button. Click this button to turn the grid on or off. Each square on the grid represents one square unit of measure. You Register by simply choosing a Username and Password, and entering them in the 'Username' and 'Password' fields at the top of the page. Then click the 'Register' button. If you would like to Save your work, you will need to first Register (see above). When you have a room you would like to Save, click the 'SAVE' button, which is in the upper left corner. The room title border color will change from green to red to indicate that the room has been saved. The status bar on the bottom of your browser will also let you know that the room has been saved. In the future, if you want to retrieve rooms that you have saved, click the 'OPEN...' button, which is in the upper left corner. This will open a list of your saved rooms. You can select a room from that list, and click 'OPEN,' and that room will be loaded into the browser. You can also delete any of your saved rooms from that list by clicking 'DELETE.' Click the 'Return' button to return to your room designs. You can Print any of your room designs by clicking the 'PRINT' button, which is in the upper left corner. A gif image of your room will be displayed in a second browser window. You can then print that gif by clicking the 'PRINT' button on that page, or using the 'Print' feature in your web browser.
Press 'ALT' plus:
C to clean the room. This key removes any free-form drawing that may be present. Pressing this button does not remove any furniture. This shortcut has no button correlate. R to rotate an item. This has the same effect as clicking the 'Rotate' button, except this key will always rotate the item 90 degrees. D to duplicate an item. This has the same effect as clicking the 'Copy' button while in 'Update Mode'. X to delete an item. This has the same effect as clicking the 'Delete' button while in 'Update Mode'. N to create a New Room. This has the same effect as choosing 'CREATE NEW' in the 'current room' pull-down menu. |
